It’s only a few shorts month until you can see Dinosaur Jr. in Prospect Park.
Now through Sun, March 9
New Colossus Festival: This multi-venue fest delivers up-and-coming bands in the vein of CMJ (RIP) and SXSW (minus the Doritos stage). For those with flexible daytime schedules—the marginally employed, retirees, third-shift workers—there are afternoon showcases at Baker Falls, Berlin and Pianos on Friday and music at a wider array of times and locations on Saturday and Sunday. BrooklynVegan has some acts to catch.
Thu, Mar 6
James Brandon Lewis Trio at Public Records: The saxist has been on a tear lately, most recently recording and touring with The Messthetics (a band with two members of Fugazi that blew my mind at Big Ears 2019 and again when I saw the JBL collab in 2023). That record is great and this one continues the mission with a trio rounded out by drummer Chad Taylor and bassist Josh Werner. It’s funk-informed rock-jazz fusion with a rhythmic bounce that reminds me a little of vintage Medeski Martin & Wood.
Sat, Mar 8
Night in the Library at BPL Main Branch: The night of lectures and music at the big library includes “Ask an Elder” sessions, conversations about economics and literature (I know, right?), and a musical performance by Laurie Anderson.
Sun, Mar 9
Winter Song w/ Zachary Cale, Domestic Drafts & Katy the Kyng, Helen Rush at Mama Tried: The reasons why Mama Tried is one of my favorite places in the city are thus: nice backyard, friendly vibe, situated under the BQE in a kind of noir dystopia way, dope musicians play there for free, pulled pork sandwiches with uncommonly good potato salad. The Sunday series curated by songwriter Zachary Cale includes Domestic Drafts (Garcia Peoples bassist and writer Andy Cush) and Katy the Kyng playing a duet set. Dig Domestic Drafts’ just released debut, Only the Singer, a collection of barfly rock backed by members of Garcia Peeps, Office Culture and Jeff from Sunwatchers on sax.
Sun, Mar 9
Deep Listening w/ Ruth Mascelli, Justin Allen and Victoria Keddie at Parkside Lounge: This bimonthly live music series focuses on experimental, avant-garde sounds in the back of an LES dive bar. That’s a lot of my favorite words in one sentence, and a way of saying, I don’t really know what’s going to happen. Poke around on their Instagram for a taste of what’s been going down.
